권세진 SeJin Kwon

권세진은 한국 사회의 단면과 현실의 풍경들을 지필묵을 가지고 어떻게 그려낼 것인가에 대한 관심이 많다. 동양화의 정서적 표현과 필(毛筆)의 요소를 바탕으로 그리는 방식을 연구한다. 권세진의 작업은 기억과 상실에 대한 정서적인 자극으로부터 출발하였다. 사진을 통해 받은 기억과 존재에 대한 감각이 동양화라는 매체와 물성을 만나 어떠한 방식으로 구현될 것인가에 대해 고민한다. 사진을 대상으로 삼아 재현하는 그의 작업방식의 특성은 본질적으로 동양회화의 오랜 전통적 양식과의 갈등으로 이어졌다. 이에 대한 해결방안으로 동양화의 물성은 유지한 채 현대적 형상을 가져오는 방법을 선택하였다. 권세진은 동양회화에서의 준법(皴法)의 개념을 변용하여 획의 반복을 통해 화면을 구축하고 형상을 그려나간다. 이는 화면에서 중첩의 구조와 시간성을 생성해내는 표현으로 확장되었고, 회화공간에서 물리적인 진행 과정을 드러내는 장치로서 여백(餘白)을 활용하였다. 이어서 한지 그 자체를 표현의 영역으로 심화시켜, 그림을 그리는 바탕으로서의 한계에서 벗어나 공간에 한지를 매달아 설치하는 등 프레임 밖으로의 확장을 시도하고 있다.

SeJin Kwon is interested in depicting the cross-section of Korean society and the scenery of reality through the medium called Ji Pil-muk (paper, writing brushes, and ink stick). Study on the ways of drawing is made based on the emotional expressions and elements of strokes in Eastern paintings. Kwon’s work began with a sentimental stimulus regarding memory and loss. When memories and a sense of existence conceived through photography meet the properties of Eastern Painting, the ways of materializing this encounter gets examined. His style of recreating photography led to a fundamental conflict with the deeply rooted tradition of Eastern painting. As a solution to this, Kwon chooses to bring contemporary images while maintaining the characteristics of Eastern painting. Kwon transforms the concept of compliance embedded in Eastern painting by constructing a screen and drawing shapes through repetition of strokes. This expanded onto screens to express the structure of superstition and temporality, and blank spaces get utilized to display the physical progress in painting. In addition, Kwon challenges the limitations of Hanji by developing the material as its own area of expression beyond the frame by making experimental attempts such as hanging the material in floating space.
